Drones are a way to combat ISIS

Although the United States, Russia, as well as other countries, want to use modern aircraft more often, Ukraine lacks the resources necessary to train its troops on these aircraft. While the Ukrainians do have training on aircraft and vehicles in Western countries like Germany, they are not able to get the same training on drones in Ukraine. Ukrainians are used to using older equipment like trucks, and drones are easier to use for them. Drones can be operated by soldiers without the need for pilots. Drones are also easy to use, similar to those in video games.

Aerorozvidka

Ukrainian military employs a unique method to fight ISIS in eastern Ukraine. They use octocopters that are equipped with thermal cameras for nighttime operations. Some drones can even light up columns and are equipped with anti-tank weapons. These drones are very maneuverable and can hold up to 11 lbs of payload. Due to their small size, the drones are able to fly low over targets and drop munition.

Originally an IT enthusiast group, Aerorozvidka has become a military air reconnaissance unit. The organization's first mission was as a civilian drone company, but over time, it evolved into a full-fledged unit with its own head. Due to export restrictions, the Ukrainian government prohibited Russian military aircraft entry into Ukraine. Since many of the components of the drones are manufactured in the US, Aerorozvidka relies on donations and crowdfunding to help keep the company going.

Switchblade

The U.S. military supplied Ukraine with the armed "Switchblade", drones that are capable of hitting Russian tanks hundreds of miles away. These unmanned aircraft vehicles were created by the US Air Force in response a Ukrainian request. According to a Pentagon spokesperson, John Kirby, more than 121 of these machines are being dispatched to Ukraine. But there is no concrete information on how the Switchblades will be used in the conflict in Ukraine.

The Switchblade drone is small and easy to launch from a tube. It has a range 40 km. The Switchblade has a range of 40 kilometers and can hit Russian convoys up to 6 miles, unlike Bayraktar. These small aircraft can easily be assembled in minutes for a conflict such as Ukraine. The Switchblade can fly faster than the Bayraktar which is currently the U.S. ally.

Russian kamikaze drones

The US has recently announced a $800million military aid package for Ukraine. Unmanned aircraft known as "Phoenix Ghosts" will be delivered to Ukraine. They are meant to terrorize Russian forces. These aircraft, which are designed to fly over areas for thirty to forty minutes, are equipped with warheads and cameras. One such drone is the Switchblade, a 5.5-pound hovering munition that can take out armored vehicles and tanks.

These lightweight aircrafts are small and light, and can operate from any location, whether it is land, air or sea. Any advantage an opponent has over their counterpart in an aerial battle like this is vital. Russian kamikaze aircrafts pose a threat to that advantage. This capability will prove to be critical for Ukraine's defense, since it can break Russian sieges as well as attack command-and-control centers. Even though such capabilities would pose a serious risk to both sides, Ukraine could win if it can use small drones to make a difference in battle.

U.S. loitering Drones

Russia has started integrating ZALA KYB lotering munitions to its military arsenal. These drones have the ability to use deadly loitering munition in the style of bazookas. These autonomous killing devices could spread to black markets through the use of loitering robots. But experts and observers are worried. So what can the U.S. Do to prevent this?

drones with camera and video display

Kirby says that more than 121 Switchblade drones have been sent by the U.S. to Ukraine to assist Kiev in fighting Russian forces. The Switchblade drone can hover in a given area for between 30 and 40 minutes. It weighs in at 5.5 pounds. It has a camera and small warhead. Its purpose is to destroy the opposition forces in Ukraine.
